About the project
-
Odd One Out is a coming-of-age documentary exploring the life and career of Adam, a Western Sydney-based prosthetics and animatronics artist whose work has spanned Australian and international film productions. Blending present-day interviews with stylised visual sequences inspired by 1980s sci-fi and horror cinema, the film examines creativity, identity, and the experience of growing up feeling like an outsider.
-
The project required balancing an ambitious creative vision with the practical limitations of an independent production. With a limited budget and schedule, the documentary needed to combine cinematic reenactments, observational storytelling, and interviews while remaining authentic to Adam’s personal and professional journey.
-
Through a carefully considered visual approach, the film brought together documentary realism with imaginative cinematic elements that reflected Adam’s world and creative influences. Odd One Out went on to become an award-winning documentary, successfully capturing both the emotional core of Adam’s story and the artistry behind his work.
